"We made a mistake, a foolish act, and we paid the consequences. We apologized — I apologized to those I needed to apologize to. Fortunately, it was resolved very quickly." The incident in question occurred in August 2025 when Pilato and fellow Italian Olympic swimmer Chiara Tarantino were briefly detained and questioned by authorities at Singapore Airport over an alleged unpaid purchase at a duty-free shop. The situation was resolved within a few hours with the assistance of the Italian Embassy, and no criminal charges were filed. While it sounds like a simple misunderstanding, the Italian Swimming Federation (FIN) took the matter seriously.
To provide some context, Pilato, currently 21, is a force to be reckoned with in the swimming world. Her bronze medal at the 2025 World Championships was her fifth career World Championship medal in the 50m breaststroke (LCM) and sixth overall, having won the 100m breaststroke in 2022. Tarantino, 22, is also a significant figure in Italian swimming, specializing in sprint events and participating in the World Championships as a relay swimmer.
Following the incident, the Italian Swimming Federation (FIN) initiated disciplinary proceedings. After receiving authorization from the Office of the CONI Prosecutor General, the Federation accepted the Federal Prosecutor’s Office proposal, following individual plea bargain requests submitted by the athletes. Considering the investigation's outcome and the swimmers' cooperative attitude, FIN imposed a 90-day suspension from all federation and social activities, effective immediately. This decision forced Pilato and Tarantino to miss the 2025 European Short Course Championships and the Italian National SC Championship.
With the suspension now behind her, Benedetta Pilato has returned to full training. Since September, she has been based in Rome, working with coach Mirko Nozzolillo.
