A Columbia University student, Elmina Aghayeva, was detained by federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Thursday morning, sparking protests and concerns over civil rights violations. The incident occurred at 6:30 a.m. in one of the university's residential buildings, with the DHS agents allegedly making misrepresentations to gain entry and search for a 'missing person'.
According to the university's acting president, Claire Shipman, the agents impersonated NYPD officers and used a phony missing persons bulletin for a 5-year-old girl. This claim is supported by Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, who described the actions as 'staggering' and a violation of civil rights. The DHS, however, provided a different account, stating that the agents arrested Aghayeva, an immigrant from Azerbaijan, for failing to attend classes and that the building manager and her roommate allowed officers into the apartment.
Governor Kathy Hochul expressed concern, questioning whether the agents had a warrant and demanding details about the arrest conditions. She criticized the DHS for misrepresenting their identity, stating that such actions are 'out of control'. Hochul has proposed a bill to ban ICE from entering sensitive locations like schools and dorms.
New York City officials, including City Council Speaker Julie Menin and majority leader Shaun Abreu, also weighed in, emphasizing that ICE has no place in schools and universities. Jumaane Williams, the city's public advocate, described the incident as a 'despicable and lawless act', while Rep. Adriano Espaillat and Rep. Jerry Nadler and Assemblymember Micah Lasher called for enhanced protections and policies at Columbia University to ensure a safe environment for students and staff.
