Pokémon Go Super Mega Raids & Link Charges Explained! New Update Breakdown (2026)

Get ready for an exciting evolution in Pokémon Go! The introduction of Super Mega Raids and a new currency, Link Charges, is set to revolutionize the game and encourage social interaction among players.

But here's where it gets controversial... Niantic, the game's developer, is not just adding a new raid type; they're aiming to foster a more connected community. With Super Mega Raids, players will have to unite and strategize to defeat exceptionally powerful Mega-Evolved Pokémon. It's a challenge that demands collaboration and could spark some interesting dynamics.

The new raid type will introduce a higher tier of Mega Level Pokémon, known as Super Max. Players will have the chance to battle and catch new Mega Pokémon, including Mega Victreebel and Mega Malamar, which recently made their debut in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. But the real focus is on creating an environment that encourages players to connect and engage with each other.

According to Niantic's blog post, Super Mega Raids will present a unique challenge. The Mega-Evolved Pokémon will become enraged, erecting shields that reduce damage. Players will need to work together to break these shields, but with a twist: each trainer can only take down one shield. It's a strategic dance that requires coordination and teamwork.

"Once the opposing Pokémon becomes enraged, a Mega-Evolved Pokémon from your party will automatically join the battle. Your next attack will be powered up, allowing you to break one shield easily!" Niantic explains.

Successfully completing a Super Mega Raid will yield substantial rewards, including more Mega Energy. It's a sweet incentive for players to embrace this new social aspect of the game.

John Funtanilla, senior producer on Pokémon Go, emphasizes that Super Mega Raids are more than just a new activity. They're a deliberate design choice to promote socialization and community engagement. "A lot of players don't interact with Megas. We want to change that and bring the focus back to the community," Funtanilla says.

Funtanilla highlights that current Mega Raids don't differ much from regular raids. However, with Super Mega Raids, they aim to create energetic and entertaining group battles. The introduction of Link Charges, a new currency inspired by Max Particles, is designed to encourage social play. Players can earn Link Charges through community check-ins, gifting friends, opening gifts, and completing weekly challenges.

"We want players to interact and engage with each other. We're rewarding these social actions because we see a future where players come together naturally," Funtanilla adds.

Niantic is also working on behind-the-scenes systems to encourage player convergence. Funtanilla hints at testing ways to have players congregate in popular play areas, ensuring that players gravitate towards each other and create memorable experiences.

"We know where to place certain spawns and Super Mega Raid logic to bring players together. We want to solve the issue of having too many spawns across nearby gyms and create organic meetups," Funtanilla explains.

Players can expect to experience these new systems and the improved Mega Raids starting this weekend with Pokémon Go Tour events in Tainan and Los Angeles. The global rollout of Super Mega Raids will begin on February 28 with Pokémon Go Tour: Kalos – Global.

So, are you ready to embrace the social aspect of Pokémon Go and create some awesome memories? Or do you prefer a more solitary gaming experience? Let us know in the comments! We'd love to hear your thoughts on this new direction for the game.
