Before you buy a smartwatch or smart ring, consider what you're giving up. In my opinion, the widespread adoption of these devices raises critical questions about data privacy, security, and consumer rights. Personally, I think it's fascinating how these wearables have evolved beyond simple step-counting, constantly collecting data on our fitness, sleep, fertility, and more. But this convenience comes with a price. What many people don't realize is that the more data we collect, the more vulnerable we become to breaches and the potential sale of our personal information to third parties for marketing, insurance profiling, or other purposes. From my perspective, this is a significant concern, especially given the lack of federal regulations around consumer health data in the US. In fact, over 20 states have passed comprehensive data privacy laws, but without federal regulation, consumers are left with a patchwork quilt of requirements. What makes this particularly fascinating is that, contrary to popular belief, HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) does not cover data collected by wearables, which are not considered covered entities. This means it often falls on consumers to determine how to protect themselves and their data. One thing that immediately stands out is that, with the lack of federal regulation, the terms of service and privacy policies of wearable manufacturers become crucial. These policies are designed to align with legal requirements and the company's approach to data processing. A 2025 analysis published in the peer-reviewed journal npj Digital Medicine evaluated the privacy policies of 17 leading wearables manufacturers, using a rubric of 24 criteria. Based on this analysis, Google, Apple, and Polar had the lowest risk scores, while Xiaomi, Wyze, and Huawei had the highest. What this really suggests is that consumers should seek transparency and prioritize companies with strong privacy and security practices. In my opinion, people who care about privacy will often decide which wearable to buy based on their trust in the manufacturer, rather than by examining the privacy policy. For example, if you're in the Apple ecosystem and have been happy with how they've handled your data, you're more likely to choose an Apple Watch. This raises a deeper question: How is this company actually making money? If you're paying a good chunk of money for a watch or a ring and a paid service, they've got a significant incentive to keep you happy. However, if it's a free service or a very cheap device, your data is probably the product. This might mean it's being sold to third parties or advertisers who you wouldn't necessarily want to know the ins and outs of your health. If you take a step back and think about it, this is a critical consideration. In my opinion, consumers should be cautious and understand where, when, and how they ought to be taking precautions. Besides paying attention to manufacturers' privacy promises and reputations, there are a few practical steps you can take to protect your data: Read the privacy policy or ask a chatbot for a summary, or search for the word 'data' to find specifics about where your information is going. Look for transparent, public-facing messages around privacy and data security from companies when shopping for a wearable. If you have a smartwatch or smart ring you aren't using anymore, delete your data from it. You don't want data sitting there unused in the event that the company is breached down the line. Check what devices your phone and wearables are connected to, and audit this regularly. If you're using an AI chatbot to analyze your health data, make sure you've checked your settings and toggled off the option to use your data for training, or that you're using a temporary chat. Personally, I think it's essential to stay informed and proactive about data privacy. By taking these steps, consumers can better protect their personal information and make informed decisions about the wearables they choose. In conclusion, while smartwatches and smart rings offer incredible convenience and insights into our health, it's crucial to consider the potential risks and take steps to safeguard our data. By being vigilant and informed, we can ensure that our personal information remains private and secure.
